Non – Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT)
NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Test) is the best option available for expecting parents willing to know important information about fetal health with virtually no risk to their pregnancy while delivering accurate results during the first trimester. This test gives reliable information regarding fetal genetic profiles that no other test provides. Non-Invasive Prenatal Test determines the ploidy of 22 paired somatic chromosomes and 1 pair of gender-determining sex chromosomes. Any extra or missing chromosome could be related to certain genetic conditions with different levels of severity. Examples are as the following: Down Syndrome (extra copy of chromosome 21), Edward Syndrome (extra copy of chromosome 18), Patau Syndrome (extra copy of chromosome 13), and Turner Syndrome (missing copy of sex chromosome X). NIPT can be easily done in a doctor’s office, laboratory, or in your home from a single blood draw of approximately 10 cc, and can be performed as early as week 10 of pregnancy.
